After 42 years of dedicated service to Catholic education, Michael Punch is retired at the end of last year, bringing to a close an extraordinary career within Catholic Schools of Maitland-Newcastle. His journey began as a student within the Catholic school system and 42 years later, that same system has been shaped by his leadership, faith and unwavering commitment to young people.听
Throughout his career, Michael has worked across several diocesan schools, gaining a deep understanding of Catholic education at every level. For the past 11 years, he has served as Principal of St听Peter鈥檚 Primary School, Stockton.听
Michael is best known for the way he connects with students. Whether through a shared laugh, a moment of encouragement听or a song played on his ever-present guitar, he brings joy and humanity into everyday school life. His humour and approachability have created a school environment where students feel seen, safe, and valued.听
Under Michael鈥檚 leadership, St听Peter鈥檚听has become a strong, united community. He has consistently championed the importance of nurturing the whole child听–听academically, spiritually, socially, and emotionally听–听ensuring that every student is supported to grow into the person they are called to be.听
Just as importantly, Michael has empowered his staff, fostering a culture of trust,听collaboration听and professional growth. His leadership style has enabled teachers and support staff to lead with confidence,听creativity听and care, strengthening the school from within.听
The whole Catholic School听community gives thanks for his 42 years of service.听His impact will be felt for many years to come, in the lives of the students he inspired, the colleagues he supported听and the community he brought together.听
